I commonly use MS Word for essays as a history major. A
major facet of our assessments is done via writing essays and our ability to
format papers. Understanding the tools and parts of Word are essential to
formatting correctly. Up to fifteen percent of the grade at times is dependent
on properly formatting. Outside of my major, Word is commonly used for simply
typing up responses of various types.
I have no recognizable experience with fair use or copyright
in the classroom. As a teacher, I would ensure that students understand the
legal restrictions to creation. I would ensure that my students used proper and
sanctioned resources. As for my own materials, I would keep it simple and avoid
any possible conflicts. I think a student learns best when they are engaged and
not overwhelmed.
If faced with a lack of training on the teacher’s behalf, I
would use simpler systems. If a system does not translate well to a classroom,
I would avoid its use. In its place, I would use more relatable and
understandable systems. If a school bought a system without consulting a
teacher, I would propose a training course for the teachers to familiarize with
the system. Perhaps at the extreme even a period of a semester or school year
to adjust to the new systems before full implementation.
