Teachers are influenced to use technology in the classroom so
they can better connect with students, so that they may easily transmit their
knowledge to their students. Students are influenced to use technology in the
classroom to better understand the material they are presented with and connect
with their teacher.
To me, the ISTE standards are a meaningful set of rules for
educators. I particularly note the standard, “customize
and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning
styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.” As
a student who is generally in the minority for my learning style, it is
important for me to have an educator who can mold their lessons to benefit all
students. As for a standard I would personally struggle with, “participate in
local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of
technology to improve student learning,” seems unlike me.
I believe the term “digital native” is suiting to
our generation, a generation that has grown and been constantly integrated with
technology, unlike the previous generations. For example, I have noticed that to
achieve proficiency with technology, a “digital native” needs less time while a
“digital immigrant” can struggle to grasp the technology or never achieve
proficiency at all. Particularly, some educators avoid the use of computers, projectors,
or other classroom technologies. Furthermore, some professors avoid the use of
sites such as Blackboard or Canvas. I suppose that I may too struggle with future
technologies, but I don’t foresee a dramatic shift in technology such as
internet has served with the previous generations.
